Blogging from my new apple iPad

by Beth Hood on July 11, 2010

Just set up my iPad with the Wordpress app on the iPad and pretty excited about the possibilities of blogging without having to sit in front of my iMac!

To fully enable it, you have to go into your Writing options under Settings and click the box under Remote Publishing for XML-RPC for “Enable the Wordpress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols”. That seems to be it and it’s working for me already! Now I just have to figure out why I keep getting a 500 internal server error with Wordpress 3.0….

Betsy Curtis at Boston Basils in Kona

by Beth Hood on June 16, 2010

We enjoyed some great entertainment this week at Boston Basil’s in Kailua-Kona when we went to listen to the jazz-stylings of Betsy Curtis. She was a famous singer in the late sixties, part of Betsy and Chris—think Marcia and Jan Brady singing folk songs in Japan—who were so popular they made lunchboxes and stockings with their brand!

She covered a wide variety of songs at Boston Basils—mostly jazz standards, plus a little Aretha Franklin to get the audience and crowds of people on the sidewalk of Alii Drive excited! Keep your eyes open, we think she may be making a comeback in Japan sometime soon…

Oh, and we enjoyed our orders of lasagna and cheese ravioli, although another one of the other guests at our table, thought her spaghetti was a little over-cooked. The atmosphere of the live music was fantastic, the open air lounge upstairs had a great view of the water, and overall our visit there made life a little bit more fun. Cheers!

When it comes down to it, I love Thesis!

by Beth Hood on June 11, 2010

Thesis Theme for WordPress: Options Galore and a Helpful Support CommunityWhen I started getting into developing my own websites in the last couple years, I hooked up with Thesis for Wordpress rather quickly because of a suggestion by a fellow author. I have thoroughly enjoyed using it to develop my sites and since have been hired to design a number of other people’s sites, and have found it to be THE BEST format for my clients, especially the ones who have a low budget. I like to create sites that the client, even with very little technical knowledge, can make simple edits and additions to. And Thesis’ flexibility allow me to take a blank canvas and create just about anything.

Now a few months ago, I thought that I should branch out and try Joomla because I didn’t want to be pegged as a “one-trick pony” so I created a couple sites using some really nice templates from Pixels Paradise (I even recreated my Websites with Aloha site in Joomla). I liked the look and feel, and professionalism of these templates, and the idea that I had another tool in my toolbelt, however whenever I thought about making edits on these sites, I realized that I was dreading it because Joomla just isn’t as user-friendly and intuitive as Thesis. Don’t worry, I will change my web design site back to Thesis as soon as I have a spare minute!

I tried to be fair, I tried to be un-biased, but I have to admit that I love Thesis, so why bother working with another format? I realize that it’s because I’m more familiar with it, and I could get that from more experience with another platform, but when you fall in love, do you really have to keep looking around for a new love, or can you simply be satisfied and rest assured that you’ve needn’t look any further?

The other awesome thing about Thesis is that I feel part of a community of other Thesis-lovers. How fun to be a fan-boy of a WP theme! Not to mention being able to type in essentially any question I have and always find an answer. Thank you to all those amazing Thesis tutors out there. Here are some of my favorites:

Our Honorary CEO

June 4, 2010

A week ago today we had a visitor to our home. His name, we soon decided, was Jack (we were big Lost fans and since the season just ended, this influenced our decision). Then a few days later upon closer inspection we realized that Jack was actually a Jill. We were devastated as were already [...]

Is “getting ahead” a little more fun?

April 25, 2010

The question this week is: “Is getting ahead a little more fun?”
Sure, it seemed that doing a lot more work and making more money this week would be a great experiment for me. To give you a little background, at this stage of our lives, my husband brings in the majority of our income as [...]

Adding Favicons to Wordpress or Joomla

April 11, 2010

I’ve admired those sweet little images to the left of the url for so long, thinking it was simply out my league to add a favicon to my sites. It turns out it’s actually quite simple. Naturally I chose the beach ball and love what it does for the look of my site, not to [...]

Sand Balls on a Beach

March 20, 2010

In all my beach walking, I’ve seen some pretty creative castles, some well-formed sand turtles, and even a mermaid, but on Jim’s birthday we were sitting on Hapuna Beach next to the first “Sand Ball” artist I’ve ever met. I’ve never seen anyone create perfectly round balls of sand and then place them on top [...]

Tsunami Warning in Hawaii

February 27, 2010

Ok, so tsunami warnings don’t exactly make life a little bit more fun, but they did make our Saturday morning quite a bit more exciting as we tried to figure out if we were outside of the evacuation zone. Turns out that we were out of the evacuation zone according to the phone book, but [...]

Hale Kai at the Fairmont Orchid

February 19, 2010

Tonight we toasted to new beginnings for our business at the Hale Kai Restaurant, located at the Fairmont Orchid Resort on the Kohala Coast. The Hale Kai, or House by the Ocean, has a primo location right next to the beach and the pool.  The “floor” of the restaurant is actually sand (although they still [...]
